Review of Cozy Mystery Novel “The Look Of Love” By Mary Jane Clark

Mary Jane Clark is an American author of two series of suspense novels. Her first twelve books are media thrillers influenced by her three decades of experience in broadcast journalism. She plots murder mysteries investigated and solved by the characters who work at KEY News, the fictional television news world she has created. Her next series is The Wedding Cake Mysteries, featuring an actress-turned wedding cake designer who gets involved in murder cases which threaten to prevent ceremonies. The Look of Love is her latest work from Wedding Cake mysteries.

A Brief Summary:

Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, the ultra-luxurious Elysium spa and plastic surgery center caters to the rich and famous who are in need of “refreshing”—a nip here, a tuck there, a little Botox, a little detox. When Jillian Abernathy, Elysium’s owner, offers actress and professional cake artist Piper Donovan an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to create a dazzling and unique wedding cake, Piper eagerly accepts. The job, after all, will give her the time and distance she needs to sort out her feelings for handsome FBI agent Jack Lombardi.

At Elysium, everything seems picture-perfect—until a guest is brutally murdered in one of the private bungalows. Someone, it seems, wants to make sure the spa’s beautiful director never gets to walk down the aisle. And now Piper must dig beneath the glamorous surface of this idyllic oasis to uncover a very ugly truth—and a cold-blooded plan for murder.

Our Take:

Even though we are not that much into cozy mysteries, we noticed that this was a good one: This book is a quick read with a likeable protagonist. Although the setup of Piper being asked to decorate a cake for a wedding seems very repetitive (throughout the series), the mystery aspects of the main plot are very well crafted.

The author does a good job of planting few clues in the story and keeping you guessing until the reveal at the end. Overall, this is an entertaining read for the subway ride in the morning…

Our Rating: 3.6
