Gripping New Thriller: Review Of “Payoff” by Douglas Corleone
Payoff, the new thriller by Douglas Corleone is a gripping tale on the business of kidnapping, it won’t let you down if you are looking for fast-paced stories. The author is the winner of MB/MWA First Crime Novel Competition and is a former New York City defense attorney who now lives in Kapolei, Hawaii. No wonder why the story has a great Caribbean flavor to it.
When movie studio mogul Edgar Trenton’s teenage daughter, Olivia, is kidnapped during a violent home invasion in Calabasas, California, former U.S. Marshal Simon Fisk is called upon to ensure a smooth ransom exchange. But once it becomes clear that the kidnappers never intended to return Olivia to her parents, Simon must follow a lethal trail that will lead him from the powdery white sand beaches of the Cayman Islands through the wild jungles of Costa Rica, and into some of the darkest and deadliest cities of South America.
The chapters are pretty short, kind of like the scenes in a movie, and that made it easy for us to quickly go from episode to episode in this nonstop action thriller. We really liked the hero of the series Simon Fisk, and have to confess the author has done an amazing job in crafting this character. Fisk is an intriguing character, haunted by his own demons yet finding a way to combat those demons by helping other suffering families.
There are areas where the reader must suspend his/her disbelief, but nothing that ruins the pacing or the unfolding plot. If you like fast-paced stories with cinematic scenes, you need to check out this book.
