Behind Closed Doors By B. A. Paris: Revisiting A Must Read

Behind Closed Doors By B. A. Paris is the one of those quality thriller novels which only come to market only once in a while. The author grew up in England but spent most of her adult life in France. She worked both in finance and as a teacher Behind Closed Doors was her first novel.

However, something clicked with the readers of this commercial thriller debut and the sales took off. If you wonder what the reason is, it’s about superb character development.

Characterized by many readers as “one of the best thriller books that has been written in years’, the book narrates the story of Jack and Grace, a seemingly perfect couple.

B.A. Paris starts by painting a beautiful portrait of the couple and then throws in seeds of doubt. Everyone knows Jack and Grace: He has looks and wealth; she has charm and elegance. He’s a dedicated attorney who has never lost a case; she is a flawless homemaker, a masterful gardener and cook, and dotes on her disabled younger sister.

Though they are still newlyweds, they seem to have it all. People might not want to like them, but they do. Many friends are hopelessly charmed by the ease and comfort of their home, by the graciousness of the dinner parties they throw.

Jack and Grace seem inseparable. Some might call this true love. For others, the situation is more curious: Grace never answers the phone. She can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. That’s not all which seems unusual: There are high-security metal shutters on all the downstairs windows of their house. Some might wonder what’s really going on once the dinner party is over, and the front door has closed.

Character development aside, this book is a believable psychological thriller that will have the reader turning page after page wanting more. With an easy writing style, a reader can finish the book in once sitting and the ending is satisfying. With a plot which is guaranteed to haunt the readers, the novel and author should be on the reading list of any psychological thriller fan.
