American Carnage: A Crime Comics For Today’s Political Age

American Carnage, the new crime comics series from DC, is a surprisingly realistic narrative about the dark side of today’s political climate and what could happen if things get out of control.

Written by Bryan Edward Hill ((Detective Comics, The Wild Storm: Michael Cray) and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez (Wolverine, Punisher), American Carnage is the third new series in DC Vertigo’s new wave of titles. It covers the story of disgraced FBI agent Richard Wright who is offered a chance for redemption when his old mentor sends him undercover to infiltrate a white supremacist group believed to be responsible for the death of a fellow agent.

Wright is half black, half white and has a surprising ability in blending in with criminals. He starts by approaching a well-known philanthropist named Morgan, a MAGA true believer and celebrity in nationalist circles. But he realizes very quickly that the path he has stepped into is indeed an extremely dangerous one.

This series started on November 21 2018 and so far three issues of American Carnage have been released. The 4th chapter is scheduled for a February 20 release from what appears to be a 5-part series.

The summary here provides a glimpse into the initial portion of the story where FBI agent Sheeba Curry visits Richard at his Los Angeles home. She suspects that it’s not just conservative media personality Morgan’s message that is fueling radical violence, but his direct involvement.
